How To Grow Long, Strong, Beautiful Hair
It's true: trim periodically
Getting regular trims to cut off your dead ends won't necessarily make your hair grow faster, but it will keep your ends looking healthy and prevent them from working their way up strands. Therefore, scissors are your friend! Expert stylists suggest taking around just an eighth of an inch off every 10 to 12 weeks to prevent extreme split ends before they start.
Brush less often
Brushing you hair constantly can cause physical harm to your hair. Whenever you have tangles, be sure to start from the bottom and work your way up to prevent large knots in one spot, causing breakage and hair loss. If you want to get serious, we suggest Sheila Stotts Natural Boar Bristle Brush, which is extra gentle on hair and perfect for distributing your scalp's natural oils, aka natural sheen down your hair.
Switch up your pony
A simple and effective move is to switch up where you hold your ponytail. When we pull our hair back tightly, we're damaging our strands. Keep your pony as loose as possible and place it in different spots so you don't cause breakage in one area. If you have super fragile hair, skip putting it up with a hair tie at all! If need be, gently twist your hair into a bun and clip it with a bobby pin or claw clip.
Skip the daily shampoo
Shampoo's job is to wash away dirt and product buildup, but it also can remove natural oils that keep strands healthy. It's easier for some to skip out on shampoo than others, so if you really need it, be gentle on the hair and only lather your scalp letting the suds slide down your strands. You can also opt for a dry shampoo that cleans your hair and removes access oil and odors. One of our favorite's is Living Proof's Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo.
End your showers with a cool rinse
Condition every time you shampoo, and finish your conditioning in the shower with a cold rinse. Cold water closes the hair cuticle, which can help seal your hair and prevent it from damage.
Get your nutrients
There are so many hair-boosting supplements on the market, how do you know which ones actually work? Viviscal Hair Vitamin has stood the test of time, but if you want to get down to the basics, take these basic nutrients:
Biotin - Stimulates hair growth and rebuilds hair shingles that have been damaged from over-shampooing, sun exposure, blow drying and ironing.
Fish oil - Omega-3 fats nourish the hair, support hair thickening and reduce inflammation that can lead to hair loss.
Zinc - Benefits hair follicle health and is a potent inhibitor of hair follicle regression. Zinc also accelerates hair follicle recovery.
Vitamin C - This powerful antioxidant helps protect against the oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Plus, your body needs vitamin C to create a protein known as collagen, which is an important part of hair structure that can help prevent hair from aging.
Apply a hair mask
A coconut oil treatment is a simple and really effective route to longer and healthier hair while it is meant to be used as a “Pre-Washing” Moisture Treatment. Simply apply coconut oil to your hair and cover with a shower cap and leave on for at least 30 minutes. Once your time is up, wash and condition your hair thoroughly. Wa-lah! If you want to splurge and go for something that smells really amazing, we suggest Oribe's Signature Moisture Masque.
