Add These Essential Oils To Your Hair Care Routine For Shiny, Healthy Strands

Add These Essential Oils To Your Hair Care Routine For Shiny, Healthy Strands

Essential oils are virtually everywhere across the beauty space because, well, they're arguably the closest thing we have to magic. Not only are they 100 percent all-natural, they are swarming with vitamins, minerals, and healing properties that, when applied to strands, make hair stronger and healthier with regular application. Before you get too attached to your diffuser, face steams, and cocktailing skin products, consider adding a few drops of these oils to your hair routine.

For Growth

In the winter, your hair is recovering from major strand loss during the warmer seasons. According to Live Strong, a person can lose up to 100 strands of hair per day by autumn, which is why we rely on products to strengthen the roots.

EO Pure Essential Oil French Lavender, $9.99 EOProducts.com

Lavender oil is massaged into the temples to ease headaches, and smells fabulous in body washes and other skincare products, but is, disappointedly, overlooked as a remedy for strands that just won’t grow. When the hair follicles are clogged with bacteria, it can actually prevent hair from growing long and strong. Because of its antimicrobial properties, massaging lavender oil into the scalp or adding a few drops to your favorite shampoo can fight build up.

Peppermint Essential Oil, $22 YoungLiving.com

Peppermint oil is also a gem for stressed tresses because it’s loaded with antiseptic properties that go deep inside the follicle to fight off harmful radicals while simultaneously stimulating the scalp. This encourages rapid growth of stronger, healthier strands.

For Strength

While our follicles are working to grow out strands, the harsh weather conditions such as low temperatures and dry air dehydrate the scalp introduce yet another issue, in which case our once voluminous tresses become weak.

Herb Pharm Horsetail Liquid Herbal Extract, $11.59 VitaCost.com

Ever heard of Mane and Tail? The famous horse shampoo has a reputation for producing long, strong hair fast with continuous use. Horsetail plant oil has the same effect. While not technically categorized as an essential oil, according to Viviscal, the amount of silica in horsetail oil “promotes strong hair” and seals up split ends.

Clary Sage Oil, $36.50 doTerra.com

Clary sage has also been recognized as a strengthening oil. Like lavender, clary sage is also made up of linalyl acetate, a component of essential oils that encourages hair growth and strength. Healthline suggests mixing the ingredient with either your regular conditioner or coconut oil and messaging it into the scalp twice a week as a deep 10-minute restorative mask.

For Shine

Unless you’re finding clever ways to soak up some sun, hitting the tanning bed, or spraying on a summer bronze, chances are your skin is pale during winter months. Well, your hair goes through a lull, too. Even though you book regular appointments to keep your coloring, strands lose their luster in the colder months due to dehydration.

Chamomile Roman Essential Oil, $23.95 EdensGarden.com

If you thought chamomile’s strongest talent was soothing an upset stomach, think again. Adding chamomile oil to your hair routine will soften the blow of harsh winds and below-freezing conditions by soothing hair from the root, softening each piece one by one, and reinstating that summertime shine.
