You (and Your Blowout) Need a Silk Pillowcase
Silk pillowcases are everywhere, tempting us with promises of better skin and better hair. Of course, they're also super-glam, photogenic, smooth, and cool-to-the-touch (and who doesn't want to perpetually sleep on the cool side of the pillow?). But, what about those beauty benefits?
According to Shhh Silk founder, Olivia Carr, they're the real deal. "They're the smartest investment you can make with regards to protecting your hair and skin," she says, point-blank. After all, you spend 1/3 of your life sleeping. "We often we forget the significance our pillowcase plays in maintaining our hair, reducing sleep creases and our overall sleep comfort," Carr explains.
This is in part because the smooth texture of silk allows hair to glide rather than tug when you (inevitably) move in your sleep. This, in turn, maintains the integrity of hair and reduces split ends and breakage. " It's one of the easiest steps we can take to elongate our blowouts. Another perk of that cool temperature? "Silk cools, thus reducing the sweat trapped in the hair during time sleeping," Carr says—aka: less bedhead.
Allow your hair to glide across the silk, reducing tugging or friction, in turn, reducing split ends and breakage. Your blowout will last longer, as your hair will glide whilst sleeping and the cooling effect of silk also reduces the amount of sweat which can also create bed hair!
But here's the BEST news of all—you actually don't need to constantly dry clean your pillowcases (doing so would be super extra, after all). You can place them in a protective laundry wash bag and use a gentle cycle in the washing machine using a cool-warm wash setting. Wrinkles can be ironed out.
Not convinced? Kim, Khloe, Kylie, and Kourtney are all fans of the brand's elegant designs (marbleized silk, anyone?), as are Chrissy Teigen and Gisele Bündchen.
